When her little sister was chosen to fight to the death in the
Hunger Games, 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen can only save her by
volunteering to take her place instead.
In this futuristic, dystopian society, the ruling government of
Panem forces 24 of its teenage subjects to compete in the annual
Hunger Games, a televised event that doesn't end until only one of
them remains alive. Each of the players is chosen at random by
lottery, and the whole country is forced to watch as its
representatives die in the name of twisted entertainment. Katniss
has no reason to believe she can survive the event; her teammate
Peeta has even less fighting abilities than she does, because after
all, he's only the son of a small town baker. Their competitors are
much stronger and most of them have been preparing to fight their
entire lives. Amidst this brutal struggle, no one truly wants to
kill each other, but no one wants to die either. Katniss may have
been willing to risk her own life to save her sister's, but what
lengths is she willing to go to now in order to save her own
life?
This is the first book of the award-winning Hunger Games trilogy,
which gives a whole meaning to the idea of gladiators in this
chillingly realistic science fiction world.
