Summary
Minnie has been fired from 19 jobs for telling her white
employers what she thinks of them. Aibileen struggles with a
destructive bitterness after her son dies in an accident on the
job. Hilly is a local white woman whose racist bullying finds a
certain foothold in her senate-bound husband. Then there is Eugenia
"Skeeter" Phelan who returns to her hometown of Jackson,
Mississippi to find her beloved maid Constantine missing and no one
willing to talk about her disappearance.
The women in The Help seem to live in very different worlds, but
racism in 1960s Mississippi turns out to be a uniting force for
Minnie, Aibileen, and Skeeter. Constantine's inexplicable absence
stirs up Skeeter, an aspiring writer. She resolves to write a book
about black maids in Mississippi, driven by the inequalities she
can no longer deny seeing. Unfortunately, Skeeter's book makes
Hilly very angry and the formidable community leader is a woman
Skeeter will have to reckon with.
As the women come together to get the help's story told, their bond
becomes stronger than they ever expected. Highly entertaining, The
